Uganda’s judicial efforts in balancing corporate responsibilities and human rights have been spotlighted in Debevoise & Plimpton LLP’s Africa Update to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The report, covering eight African countries between January 2021 and July 2024, highlights how Uganda is integrating international human rights standards into its legal system.

The update spotlights Uganda’s steady progress in embedding the UNGPs, exhibiting that businesses can align with human rights obligations while achieving sustainable growth. Our Senior Associates Derrick KuteesaYusuf Mawanda, and Candidate Attorney Fredrick Mulindwa analysed the findings. “Uganda’s courts have become a pivotal player in enforcing corporate accountability for human rights, reflecting broader continental trends,” said Kuteesa.

Uganda’s inclusion in this update coincides with a surge in African initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which emphasises responsible business practices. Mawanda added, “This progress is not just a legal milestone but also a socio-economic win for Uganda, ensuring businesses are drivers of inclusive development.”

Fredrick Mulindwa commented, “Uganda’s efforts set a solid foundation for neighbouring countries to follow suit, showing that business growth and human rights can coexist effectively.”

The Africa Update to the UNGPs Report was launched at the UN Business and Human Rights Forum in Geneva, marking Uganda as a leader in Africa’s journey toward ethical business conduct.
