Frederick Mpanga is a partner with AF Mpanga Advocates and Head of the Firm’s Intellectual Property and Real Estate departments.
He specializes in intellectual property law, real estate conveyancing, international trade and securitization. His expertise extends to insurance, finance, and local and international arbitration.
He has an LLB (Hons.) from Makerere University, Uganda, and an LLM from the University of Cambridge, UK. He is the lead lecturer of Intellectual Property and International Trade and Business at the leading law school in Uganda, Makerere University Law School.
He is a highly regarded litigator and has successfully handled several precedent setting disputes in the trademark space, bank recovery cases, land disputes among others. He served as a consultant to the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the Seventh Parliament of Uganda in the process leading to the amendment of the Copyrights Act Cap. 81 and the enactment of the Uganda’s current principal legislation on the law of copyright, the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, 2006. Frederick Mpanga was also part of the legal private practitioners in Uganda who were engaged and advised the Legal and Parliamentary Committee of the Eighth Parliament of Uganda in the process leading to the amendment and repeal of the Trademarks Act 217, and the enactment and passing of the current law on trademarks, the Trademarks Act, 2010.
Frederick has built a Sports Law practice which has seen him act for the Uganda Olympic Committee. Most notable, Fred represented and successfully challenged the Uganda Olympic Committee in an application which would have the effect barring the Uganda Olympic Team from taking part in the London Olympics. He has also acted for Super sport Inc. in contentious matters against the Federation of Uganda Football Associations regarding the rights to air football games on local TV stations. Frederick is also counsel to the Registered Trustees of the Cricket Association of Uganda and has acted for a local football club in Uganda and advised it on a potential arbitration before the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Vienna.
Frederick is regionally and globally renowned for his excellence in the IP space and has received several top citations and recognitions from international directories such as World Trademark Reviews. He wasrecently ranked as a World Trade Mark Global Leader by the World Trademark Review.
He has been ranked for several years by World Trademark Review 2020.
